The average rating of this collection is pretty low, but I thought all five stories were quite good。 Best is certainly Quantum of Solace (which is definitely not your typical Bond story), followed closely by The Hildebrand Rarity。 View to a Kill and Risico were also excellent。

I always think James Bond novels are padded, usually with snobbiness, or card-playing, or a travelogue。 These stories get to the point and stay there, and four of the five are excellent, if you overlook the sexism/misogyny that almost ruins the title story。 The exception to excellence is “Quantum of Solace,” which is an homage to Somerset Maugham and can most kindly be characterized as “nice try。”

I loved this series of stories。 My favorite was Quantum of Solace, which has nothing to do with the movie and is not even a Bond story, but just something he's told after a dinner party。 There is, again, animal cruelty, including Bond himself killing a manta ray because he can。 I still mostly enjoyed the stories。 I loved this series of stories。 My favorite was Quantum of Solace, which has nothing to do with the movie and is not even a Bond story, but just something he's told after a dinner party。 There is, again, animal cruelty, including Bond himself killing a manta ray because he can。 I still mostly enjoyed the stories。 。。。more

Before James Bond hit the movie screens, consideration had been given to a television series and four of the five stories in this collection were adapted from story outlines Fleming had compiled。 The fifth, “From a View to a Kill”, was initially outlined as background for MOONRAKER。 Fleming uses these stories to explore Bond’s motivation and attitude。 In “Quantum of Solace” Bond’s glib remark that if he ever got married it would be to an air hostess, because they are eager to please, is typical Before James Bond hit the movie screens, consideration had been given to a television series and four of the five stories in this collection were adapted from story outlines Fleming had compiled。 The fifth, “From a View to a Kill”, was initially outlined as background for MOONRAKER。 Fleming uses these stories to explore Bond’s motivation and attitude。 In “Quantum of Solace” Bond’s glib remark that if he ever got married it would be to an air hostess, because they are eager to please, is typical of his view of women。 The tale is a cautionary one, however, as his host recounts a chilling account of a husband spurned。 The story plays out as a warning to Bond。 In “For Your Eyes Only” Bond debates the psychological impact of revenge killing with Judy Havelock, whose parents have been murdered by a drug cartel。 He ultimately lets her help him pay back the debt。 “The Hildebrand Rarity” sees Bond question man’s need to kill for trophies as his rude American host, Milton Krest, seeks a rare fish in the Seychelles, whilst abusing is sub-servient wife。 Krest looks to add poison to the sea thereby killing thousands of other fish in his quest for his prize。 Bond reflects on his own need to kill for his country and his own sport of killing a stingray, which he views as predatory。 His debate with himself is widened as he becomes more concerned with the abuse Krest delivers to his wife and there is ambiguity in the ultimate justice。 “From a View to a Kill” and “Risico” are more straight-forward adventures。 The former feels more like an interlude and hardly stretches Bond。 It is wrapped up too neatly and is the weakest of the stories here。 “Risico” is an excellent story that pits Bond against feuding smugglers Kristatos and Colombo。 There is action and intrigue packed into a very satisfying tale, that along with “For Your Eyes Only” would form the basis for the Roger Moore film of the latter title。 This collection of stories is much more down to earth than Fleming’s preceding novels and in the stronger stories is the better for it, as it makes Bond more human and less of a plot cypher。 。。。more

A collection of short stories, some great and some not。 Amazing to see the bits and pieces that have been lifted to be placed in movies。

Worst of the books so far。 Stories just ended at times。 Was hopeful but failed most of the time

Interesting collection of stories, and Mr。 Samuel West does a fabulous job of narrating。 Inflections and accents on point! Very apropos of a suave, capable, debonair spy like Bond。I never realized that some of the movie titles came from short stories rather than full length novels。 I wonder if Risico and The Hildebrand Rarity will someday be made into movies?Alright, what’s next? I’ve got more driving to do, and I’d appreciate more audible entertainment。。。

Well for some reason I neglected to write a review or rate it at the time。 Not sure why but it's a mixed group of shorter Bond tales。 The Hildebrand Rarity and Quantum of Solace were my favourites for the different side of Bond we see。 Well for some reason I neglected to write a review or rate it at the time。 Not sure why but it's a mixed group of shorter Bond tales。 The Hildebrand Rarity and Quantum of Solace were my favourites for the different side of Bond we see。 。。。more

In this collection of short stories, we see Bond in less intense situations。 Yes, there are still murders to solve and a drug smuggling ring to break up, but we are also told the tale of a spy's unfaithful wife。 Bond's adventures are a bit less "thrilling" as he doesn't have the pressure of world-altering events in the backdrop, but it's still insightful to see how Bond's mind works。 If you're looking for Bond to save the world, try a different book。 (Moonraker or Thunderball) In this collection of short stories, we see Bond in less intense situations。 Yes, there are still murders to solve and a drug smuggling ring to break up, but we are also told the tale of a spy's unfaithful wife。 Bond's adventures are a bit less "thrilling" as he doesn't have the pressure of world-altering events in the backdrop, but it's still insightful to see how Bond's mind works。 If you're looking for Bond to save the world, try a different book。 (Moonraker or Thunderball) 。。。more

A collection of short stories; the titles of three, though not the plots, have been used in films。The stories are a mixture some with good twists in them。Some of the attitudes in these stories are outdated now but give a glimpse into attitudes in the 1950s。

This novel is interesting。 A collection of short stories, some really good, other worth skipping over。

This is a really interesting compilation of short stories。 Some of the best known Bond film titles, but the stories bear little or no resemblance to the original writing。Very good writing and I really enjoyed Samuel Wests reading。

Julia M。

Very enjoyable。 The main character is engaging and the story moves along nicely。

Read this installment of the James Bond series in audiobook format。 Unlike others I have read, it is a series of novellas (or extended short stories?) wrapped together。 The collection is exceptional for the description of place - you can feel yourself with Bond as he takes a train in Italy and explores the area around Venice, for example。 However, the book was weaker in terms of villains。 Nonetheless, it was fun to explore a Fleming book that wasn't adapted into a movie (despite the commonality Read this installment of the James Bond series in audiobook format。 Unlike others I have read, it is a series of novellas (or extended short stories?) wrapped together。 The collection is exceptional for the description of place - you can feel yourself with Bond as he takes a train in Italy and explores the area around Venice, for example。 However, the book was weaker in terms of villains。 Nonetheless, it was fun to explore a Fleming book that wasn't adapted into a movie (despite the commonality in title, I don't recall much common ground in terms of plot or story)。 。。。more

Fleming is a master of painting vivid scenery with words and telling stores with interesting characters。 This one was a series of short stories, and Bond is much less fun in some of them。 And yes, the racist dispersions of nationalities keep up, although not nearly as bad as others in the series。 But what made me set book down was all the swearing in one of the stories。 I can take, appreciate the need for one curse word blurted out in the final battle scene, but when it's someone saying it every Fleming is a master of painting vivid scenery with words and telling stores with interesting characters。 This one was a series of short stories, and Bond is much less fun in some of them。 And yes, the racist dispersions of nationalities keep up, although not nearly as bad as others in the series。 But what made me set book down was all the swearing in one of the stories。 I can take, appreciate the need for one curse word blurted out in the final battle scene, but when it's someone saying it every sentence to be cool, I really object。 。。。more

This volume is a group of short stories with James Bond as the hero。 Clearly, they were written in the 1950s, as they would be unacceptable today。 It is a shame he beats his wife, but they are married! That's the trouble of having sex with a negress! Once again it is fun to read the short stories that inspired so many unrelated movie titles。 As always trigger warning for misogyny and very outdated norms。

More information in Casino Royale review。 Fun book。 For the fun and action factor and the fact that the characters are a little more dense than in the movies and you get to meet the Bond that Fleming intended, I give this read a FIVE。 But, since it is not profound or complex and such (snobbery if you choose to read as such), I give it a three and will probably do so for each book。 I will also include this disclaimer in each。 Read them。 Enjoy。

Short stories instead of novels。 So the improbable love of the women Bond interacts with happens even quicker。 Probably time for another break for a book or two from 007 as the misogyny and toxic masculinity is starting to grate again。

When I decided to read this book, I did not realize it was a collection of five short stories until I completed what I thought was Chapter 1。 I was simultaneously disappointed (initially) and pleased。 A friend of mine bought me the complete set of James Bond books by Ian Fleming。 I read the first 7 pretty quickly and then took a long hiatus as other things occupied me。 So I jumped back in a week or two ago expecting a novel (like the others)。So the disappointment I experienced is like when you t When I decided to read this book, I did not realize it was a collection of five short stories until I completed what I thought was Chapter 1。 I was simultaneously disappointed (initially) and pleased。 A friend of mine bought me the complete set of James Bond books by Ian Fleming。 I read the first 7 pretty quickly and then took a long hiatus as other things occupied me。 So I jumped back in a week or two ago expecting a novel (like the others)。So the disappointment I experienced is like when you take a bite of food or a sip of a drink thinking it is going to be something you are specifically looking forward to and finding out (as it hits your taste buds) that it is something else entirely。 And even if you like it, the failure to meet expectations is a let-down。Once I got over that, however, I was very pleasantly surprised。 Each of the five stories is very different from the other。 So to a certain extent you feel like you are getting five for the price of one。My favorite of the stories was For Your Eyes Only。 The tension, the character development and the initial dissonance between the heroine and Bond are almost perfect。 Risico comes in second for me。 It is unusual in that the details in the telling of the story and the plot twist, all of which occur in 40 or so pages of a small paperback are a great example of Ian Fleming's ability to keep you on the edge of your seat with a lot of action without the usual gadgets and technology at Bond's disposal。 Third is Quantum of Solace。 It is so unlike anything of the other books or stories。 Spoiler alert - at no time is Bond in danger in this one, yet it is a captivating bit of story-telling。 One to read while sipping a cocktail or a scotch and listening to some jazz in the background。 It's in some ways boring compared to the typical Bond adventure, yet before you know it the story is over and you wish it wasn't。The other two stories are fine (From a View to a Kill and The Hildebrand Rarity), but didn't capture me in the way the others did。 Overall, I recommend this book to Bond fans, but think you should be a fan before engaging with these stories。 。。。more

Back when I read and loved Octopussy and The Living Daylights I pondered whether it was I preferred James Bond in a short fiction format more than novels。 Turns out: nope。 It was honestly such a slog reading this book and I probably would've given it up if it wasn't my first book of the year (but I did end up skipping one of the stories after a really boring opening)。Unlike the tight and well-plotted stories in the later collection that I preferred, none of the ones here feel natural as short st Back when I read and loved Octopussy and The Living Daylights I pondered whether it was I preferred James Bond in a short fiction format more than novels。 Turns out: nope。 It was honestly such a slog reading this book and I probably would've given it up if it wasn't my first book of the year (but I did end up skipping one of the stories after a really boring opening)。Unlike the tight and well-plotted stories in the later collection that I preferred, none of the ones here feel natural as short stories but more like condensed novels; which in turns makes them all kind of just meandering, purposeless, and way over-detailed。 I will say though that the only story I really liked in this book was "Quantum of Solace" -- which ironically I think is the one most other people like the least, and is also the only one with no action or spywork at all。 Maybe I'm just a contrarian。 Or maybe I just liked Fleming taking the chance to flex something different and weird in his writing, and maybe it's that which I'm looking for the most in these attempts I make at reading him。 。。。more

Oh boy, what to say about this book that hasn’t already been said。。。 it’s a collection of short stories, the longest being around 50 pages。 Other reviewers aren’t wrong in that the normal James Bond story really doesn’t fit into this format, but I really like this collection。 Quantum of Solace is complex out of left field, but an absolutely wonders story。 If I had anything negative to say about these it would be that, in 2020, there are a lot of cringe-worthy parts that really don’t hold up with Oh boy, what to say about this book that hasn’t already been said。。。 it’s a collection of short stories, the longest being around 50 pages。 Other reviewers aren’t wrong in that the normal James Bond story really doesn’t fit into this format, but I really like this collection。 Quantum of Solace is complex out of left field, but an absolutely wonders story。 If I had anything negative to say about these it would be that, in 2020, there are a lot of cringe-worthy parts that really don’t hold up with time。 If you can get past those and maybe read them in the context they were written I highly recommend this book。 。。。more
